Kathmandu:zr Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, has intensified diplomatic efforts for the safe release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali citizen reportedly held captive by Hamas since their attack on Israel in October 2023.
On Tuesday evening, Dr. Rana held a telephonic conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, urging Israel's support to secure Joshi’s freedom. Minister Sa'ar assured Dr. Rana of Israel's continued commitment to ensuring the safe release of all captives, including Joshi.
Dr. Rana acknowledged Israel's advocacy efforts and expressed her appreciation for its role in working towards the safe return of those abducted.
Diplomatic Outreach with Qatar
Earlier the same day, Dr. Rana also spoke with Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, who reiterated Qatar’s prioritization of Joshi’s release. Dr. Khulaifi highlighted Qatar’s ongoing mediation with Hamas and its efforts to facilitate the release of hostages, including women, children, and the elderly.
Qatar has been playing a significant role as a key mediator in peace talks with Hamas, a fact acknowledged by Israeli Foreign Minister Sa'ar during his conversation with Dr. Rana.
Broader Diplomatic Engagement
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Dr. Rana's leadership, has engaged with ambassadors from Israel, Egypt, and Qatar, appealing for their governments' assistance in securing Joshi’s release. Dr. Rana has also raised the issue at regional forums, the United Nations, and through bilateral meetings.
Bipin Joshi was among those abducted during the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which claimed over a thousand lives, including ten Nepali citizens. The Government of Nepal has since been persistent in its diplomatic efforts to bring Joshi home safely.
Dr. Rana's outreach underscores Nepal’s commitment to its citizens and the importance of collaborative international efforts in addressing humanitarian crises.
